Inspiration:

Every day, as I traveled to my college, I witnessed the growing issue of plastic waste around my community. I saw heaps of plastic waste in dumps and landfills, which made me wonder: If we can buy anything online, why can’t we sell plastic waste for recycling and earn money in the process? This thought led to the creation of Eco-Plex Exchange, a platform where individuals can sell their plastic waste, and recycling industries can buy it for reuse, contributing to both environmental sustainability and economic opportunities for households.

What it does : Eco-Plex Exchange is a platform designed to connect sellers (households with plastic waste) with buyers (industries that recycle the plastic). The platform allows users to list their plastic waste, and buyers (recycling companies) can browse and purchase it. By doing so, we promote a circular economy, reduce plastic waste, and offer households a way to make money while supporting environmental sustainability.

How we built it:

We built Eco-Plex Exchange using the MERN stack (MongoDB, Express, React, Node.js). The project includes:

  • Frontend: Built using React, providing an easy-to-use interface where users can list their plastic waste, browse available items, and make transactions.
  • Backend: Developed with Node.js and Express, which handles the API requests, user authentication, transactions, and the overall platform logic.
  • Database: MongoDB was used to store user profiles, product listings, and transaction data.
  • Authentication: We implemented JWT (JSON Web Tokens) for secure user login and registration, ensuring that only verified users can participate.

Challenges we ran into:

  • Building trust between buyers and sellers: One of the biggest hurdles was ensuring both sides trusted the platform. To overcome this, we added a ratings and reviews system so that users could see the reliability and quality of the participants they are engaging with.

  • Encouraging participation: Getting households to list their plastic waste and engage with the platform was difficult. We solved this by introducing a reward system, where users earn eco-points for each successful transaction, encouraging regular participation.

  • Ensuring accurate recycling data: Finding reliable recycling centers and ensuring they were trustworthy partners was a challenge. We are working on integrating verified recycling partners to make the platform more reliable.

Accomplishments that we're proud of:

  • Successful platform prototype: We built a working platform where users can easily list and sell plastic waste, and recycling industries can browse and purchase these items.
  • Creating a social impact: By offering households the opportunity to make money from their waste, we are contributing to both economic empowerment and environmental sustainability.
  • Innovative features: The integration of eco-points and rewards for users is a feature we are especially proud of because it motivates users to stay engaged and continuously contribute to a sustainable future.

What we learned:

  • The importance of community-driven solutions: A platform like this relies on active participation, and we learned that engaging users is key to success.
  • Building trust is crucial: Ensuring both buyers and sellers trust the platform was a critical part of the development process, and implementing review systems and authentication features helped us address this.
  • Tech-stack skills: We improved our skills with React, Node.js, and MongoDB, which allowed us to build a scalable platform with real-time transactions and secure user management.

What's next for ECO-PLEX EXCHANGE:

  • Expand the platform to include more types of recyclable waste, such as glass and electronic waste, making it a more comprehensive recycling solution.
  • Partner with more recycling industries to expand the network and improve the scalability of the platform.
  • Incorporate a tracking system to help users monitor their recycling impact, showing how much plastic they’ve recycled and how much money they’ve earned.
  • Enhance the user experience with more intuitive features, such as a mobile app and better filtering options for plastic waste listings.
