Inspiration

Inspired by TreeHacks' Healthcare Prompt to reduce depression and anxiety among students, EdRevolve aspires to innovate the education system and teaching styles by fusing artistic elements into everyday subjects taught at school. As learning becomes more exciting and engaging for students, we can reduce student boredom rates, reducing students' stress and depression levels as they start to find learning fun. This idea is proposed by one of our team members who's expertise is in running a youth-driven entrepreneurship education start-up over the past 8 years, having impacted 50,000 students through their organization.

What it does

Piloting with schools in Menlo Park, EdRevolve is starting with integrating the creative arts with 3 subjects (History, Geography & Math) for Middle School Students. We provide a platform for teachers/educators to book slots where local artists will come to their schools to conduct a thematic creative workshop to engage students on a given subject matter (i.e. As students are learning about European history, educators can get a professional dancer to teach their students a cultural dance from said region; or learning about a Geographical landscape of a particular region and having an artist come to your classroom to get your students to paint/sketch a scenery from said region). This way, students are actively participating in education as they explore the creative arts hands-on in between learning their everyday subject matters.

How we built it

We built the platform using Next.js, incorporating ecstatic design elements from Canva. On the back end, we are using Convex for our data processing and Checkbook as our payment gateway to receive payments upon booking confirmation. Convex greatly simplified the backend, and Vercel greatly simplified the frontend.

Challenges we ran into

One of the challenges we faced was integrating unfamiliar technology to create our platform. Learning on the spot about the how each software we wanted to implement worked pushed us to our limits, which also created a great learning experience among the chaos. Another challenge was picking out an idea to focus on. Since the members of this team come from such different backgrounds, it became difficult to choose among all the many various and unique ideas we had in mind.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud to come up with this innovative idea that we feel will revolutionize the global education landscape. Although having only met each other at TreeHacks, we are proud of how we were able to work together and leverage on each other's strengths to work on this project. Throughout this process, we are happy to be able to learn more about how we can use Next.js by Versal to build our platform, and how to incorporate Checkbook and Convex into our backend systems.

What we learned

Through the process of developing our ideas, we have improved our technical abilities and have add these opportunities to implement these new technologies into our platform.

Aside from gaining technical knowledge, we were able to attend workshops by the sponsors and particularly benefited by the session by Sanas.ai and Human Capital, where we learned the importance of captivating your audience with your start-up story, as shared by Sanas.ai founder, Maxim.

We also got the opportunity to present a 5-minute pitch of our idea to the VC, YCombinator, which aided us to improve our presentation skills and better understand our business ideas (potential challenges we might face in the long run).

What's next for EdRevolve

As we familiarize ourselves with the available technologies, we will be able to further improve our services - embed a video conferencing platform on our site via Dolby.io, add a calendar with artists' available slots for teachers to choose from, add a map function to show the artists geographically nearest to the school's location. As we incorporate these features to refine our platform, we will also be able to expand our service area, starting from the West coast to the East coast, eventually expanding outside of the United States.
