Inspiration
As students, we were thinking of how COVID-19 has negatively impacted us. However, we soon realise that we are very fortunate when compared with students from a less fortunate background such as those who struggle with remote learning due to the lack of facilities. Hence, Dear Robin was created to help balance the education scales by providing a means for those disadvantaged students to be able to acquire the resources they need.
What it does
It provides a platform for anyone to interact with students from disadvantaged backgrounds. Users are categorised as sponsors or students. Sponsors can browse current listings and choose which cause the want to sponsor. Students can post listings about the things they need for their education and can also help out other students in need by acting as sponsors.
How we built it
We decided to split the project into the 2 parts, the front end (1 person) and back end (2 person). We created a shared Github repository and periodically check up with each other. Finally, we connected the front and back end together.
Challenges we ran into
As this is our first web development project, we had to learn the front/back end throughout the hackathon. We also ran into difficulties involving creating a database and stack developing.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
This is our first web development project and our first project that is not using C++.
What we learned
We have a more detailed understanding of web development and a more thorough understanding of how to use Python.
What's next for Dear Robin
We are aiming to increase the functionalities of our web app such as having a community of students and sponsors. We also aim to finish building the process of sponsoring a listing such as having ways to verify payments and also build up the delivery system. Furthermore, we also want to set up a system to verify the listings of students to ensure that this platform is not abused. Finally, an admin interface is also required to regulate the platform.
