Inspiration
We were inspired by a curiosity and interest over the complex process and calculations to determine if a rocket will successfully orbit earth. We also were inspired by a lack of awareness on the impact of space flight on the environment.
What it does
Our website simulation allows users to design a rocket based on parameters such as amount of fuel and weight of payload and launch it into space. Users are rewarded for minimizing fuel while maximizing payload and successfully making it into earth's orbit
How we built it
We built this project by creating a github pages website which uses jekyll theming and is coded using html, css, and javascript. Our simulation is coded using javascript and three.js
Challenges we ran into
The biggest challenge we ran into while developing our project was incorporating the complex and lengthy algorithms for successful rockets into our simulation to make it precise.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Our proudest accomplishment is the accuracy of our simulation and the interactive simulation which allows users to control the rocket and witness how different factors affect is efficiency.
What we learned
While we had some previous knowledge of website development we expanded our knowledge by using tools such as github pages and challenged our knowledge of html, css, and javascript. We also learned to use three.js in order to create the animation for our simulation
What's next for Escape the Earth
We plan to continue working on the project, adding more features including more factors and designability for the rocket, as well as, a leaderboard for the simulation.
