Inspiration
We designed ExpireAI to track user grocery items and their expiry dates to help the National Zero Waste Initiative’s goal of reducing food waste.
What it does
ExpireAI tracks user grocery items and their expiry dates through the use of Computer Vision, Text Recognition AI, and Google Assistant.
How I built it
ExpireAI was built using the Google Cloud Platform. Specifically, we utilized Google Cloud Datastore and Google Cloud Functions for our backend. Additionally, we utilized Voiceflow to communicate with Google Assistant for our frontend.
Challenges I ran into
Many challenges arose throughout the development of this project. One of the major challenges that arose was the issue of ensuring that data received through Google Home was properly formatted to be stored in the database to be queried.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
We're proud of creating a complete project in our first hackathon! (for 3/4 of us)
What I learned
We learned how to create an application with Google Cloud, as well as how to integrate with a Google Home Smart Speaker.
What's next for ExpireAI
In the future we would like to implement additional voice commands for improved user experience, as well as integration with other devices.
