Inspiration
As university students who spent a majority of our time on campus in the recent past, each of us had a plethora of exposure to the benefits and drawbacks of campus dining hall services. One of these drawbacks/benefits was the bulky food orders dining hall staff had to make every week to meet the massive campus student population needs, which naturally resulted in lots of food waste. Being active members of the Riverside community, having knowledge of this problem, and knowing that a solution was possible, we got to work, and Farm2Fork was born.
What it does
Today when people have an over abundance of food, the easiest and most common reaction is throw the food away, with about 40% of Americans following this approach. Farm2Fork is a web and mobile interface that aims to change this approach by allowing organizations and people in Riverside to sell excess food online to other people and organizations in Riverside.
How we built it
We developed a user-friendly website and mobile application using modern web technologies such as React, Node.js, and TypeScript. For our mobile application we incorporated an ml model to detect different fruits and vegetables. We also used addwrite to register users to our website.
Challenges we ran into
We ran into challenges while using addwrite since there was very little information on how to use it online. We also had to learn typescript from scratch which came with its own difficulties.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud to have successfully used TypeScript in react and to have built a platform that supports local farmers, promotes sustainable agriculture, and provides consumers with healthier food options.
What we learned
We learned the value of collaboration and teamwork. We improved our technical skills while developing an end -to-end platform. We learned to use typescript in React along with some javascript.
What's next for Farm2Fork
We intend to extend our farmer network and provide a broader range of produce to our clients. We also intend to incorporate educational information on sustainable agriculture and healthy eating, with the goal of building a strong community around Farm2Fork. In addition, we intend to introduce tools like meal planning and recipe suggestions to improve the user experience and encourage more people to support local, sustainable farming.
