Inspiration

We were tired of seeing our Uncle from Tennessee post questionable “facts” on Facebook without any easy way to call him out. So we built Faxxx to bring instant, AI-powered fact-checking to the chaotic world of social media.

What it does

Faxxx is a Chrome extension that highlights factual claims in any webpage and color-codes them based on truthfulness. Green means it’s true, red means it’s fake, and orange means it’s somewhere in conspiracy land.

How we built it

We used a React-based Chrome extension scaffold with Vite for fast HMR, integrated with an LLM agent pipeline that extracts factual claims and verifies them using Tavily's search.

Challenges we ran into

  • Getting the model to distinguish between opinions and factual claims.
  • Dealing with Facebook’s DOM spaghetti to inject our UI reliably.
  • Rate limits on Tavily's APIs during rapid testing.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Built a fully functional fact-checking extension in under 4 hours
  • Designed a clean UX that overlays seamlessly on articles and posts.

What we learned

  • How to extract and classify factual claims efficiently with LLM prompts.
  • Techniques to build robust Chrome extensions with Vite hot reloading.
  • That there’s no end to the creativity of misinformation.

What's next for Faxxx

We want to:

  • Dive even deeper to provide more sources
  • Experiment with many parallel agents to speed up the verification process
  • Make the world a better place...
