Inspiration

Women have unique body composition and needs, so general exercise and nutrition guidelines may not be the end-all be-all.

Moreover, the current wellness market is saturated with people looking to make a quick buck who do not have reputable accreditations. Influencers on Youtube, Twitter, and other social media have large audiences who are willing to pay for fitness/meal plans that those influencers may not necessarily be qualified to offer.

We want to create a platform that is inclusive to womxn, empowers womxn, and connects womxn with other female-identifying professionals who have knowledge and experience in the fitness and nutrition fields.

What it does

FemFit gives female-identifying clients a reliable system to connect with wellness professionals, who are in turn given their own dedicated platform to shine as female specialists. Educational pages about professional accreditation are also provided with intent to help educate users about the wellness certifications and how important it is to be empowered to make informed decisions. Additionally, the website aims to highlight professionals who specialize in female-focused wellness topics, such as pregnancy/postpartum fitness and nutrition.

How we built it

The idea of FemFit was put into reality through Figma prototyping. Afterwards, the website was created through HTML, CSS, and Javascript on Visual Studio Code. Throughout the entire process, multiple meetings were held for constant discussions about making our service most useful to womxn of all backgrounds.

Challenges we ran into

Being college students, we definitely had limited time to work on the hackathon as a result of conflicting schedules. Additionally, the backend programming presented difficulties with working as it was intended to, but Emma was able to resolve the issue and get the login and sign-up pages working. Considering we all self-taught web development to an extent, making a website, at times, was frustrating and confusing, but we pushed through to the final product. Hosting a website was also a foreign subject to some of us, and the first hosting website we tried would not recognize our Github repo. However, we compromised by making a new Github account with the sole purpose of properly hosting our FemFit website

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of making an inclusive service that is accessible to all womxn in order to benefit and highlight female wellness. Some of us were unfamiliar with multiple subjects that were a part of this project, such as in-depth HTML, CSS, and Javascript coding, but even still, we endured, learned, and created a working website. Also, we have a fully-functioning prototype with responsive UI elements that the website properly reflects.

What we learned

Even though we ourselves are females, we learned about the female body scientifically and the statistics that support why such a service is needed today. Additionally, we all learned a great deal of web development and team skills. Lastly, as a first time for some of us, we got to host the website using Github.

What's next for FemFit

Future features would include forum pages in order to create community discussions about female fitness and nutrition, as well as a safe place for women to ask questions and receive answers. Also, in order to debunk multiple lies created by media or well-known myths, education articles could be written and added to the site. Also, progress graphs could be implemented to visualize the wellness journey.
