Inspiration
Coming out of Quarantine, many are motivated to begin exercising, whether at home or at gym. However, with there being so many available options, taking the first step can be intimidating.
What it does
FitFellas takes in your house address and a certain range to find all the available gyms. For each of these gyms, it presents their distance from your house, membership prices, and reviews. This way, users are able to compare between their options and choose which is best for them.
How we built it
To begin, we first organized the pieces we needed to build our program. -Program that finds all the gyms within a certain radius of your home and their distances and ratings -Program that scrapes data from gym websites to find their prices -Database that contains every gym and their options -Program that puts everything together and outputs all the options, with options to sort by ratings, prices, and distance.
For finding the gyms, we used the googleplaces API, googlemaps library and geo.py. For scraping, we used beautifulsoup to find the gym membership prices. To create a database, we uploaded the info from the previous programs into a csv file. We then output information from the csv.
Challenges we ran into
On our first day, we spent most of our time thinking of ideas and had no time to program. That left us with only one day to actually start coding, and we ran out of time as we were unable to make the database. We also ran into many communication problems with who was doing what, and because our members used different IDEs.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Although we were unable to successfully make our program in the end, we were able to make the functions that found the gyms and scraped the data from their websites. This was a surprise to us, as our group had zero programming experience. (We spent 30 minutes figuring out how to download libraries) We were able to struggle through many new experiences and still make something in the end, even if it was not perfect.
What we learned
The most important lesson for us was the experience in working with libraries and actually programming. We also learned the importance of good communication in a team and making sure everybody is on the same page.
