Inspiration

We are a group of Air Force vets who spent a lot of time looking at technical manuals. Often.

What it does

This application is to augment the initial phase of training a brand-new technician/aviator on a plane. While checklists will always be a part of aviation, this app aims to ease the growing pains of figuring out what the heck is going on and allow the user to begin learning. We intend for it to be modular to allow for different platforms and scenarios.

How we built it

We used Unity, Blender and Echo3D to build this application.

Challenges we ran into

This is our first project doing something like this outside of an academic setting, so that was certainly an adjustment. The other thing is that none of us owned a VR headset so the functionality of it is questionable at best. With that said Unity allows for easy conversion to VR so with the right equipment and play testing the transition should be relatively straight forward.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

From drafting the idea to figuring out the logistics, we're proud of the work we've done in such a short span of time.

What we learned

Making video games is hard. There's an intersectionality between art, coding and overall design planning that isn't apparent when done separately.

What's next for Flight Deck

We're aiming to give it a good amount of polish as well as flesh out some more of the functionality. Concretely adding more animations as well as textures.
