Inspiration
I was inspired to make this app after I realized just how much food gets wasted, even though it has huge environmental impacts, and there are people that still do not get enough food. Thus, this website was created in an effort to educate people on these impacts, and give them a simple tool to give them ideas on how to use the food they have.
What it does
The website starts on a homepage that educates people on exactly what food waste is, and how its negative consequences. Then, you can learn about a few simple solutions you can integrate at home. Finally, the Smart Fridge feature allows users to track their food, which they can then input into the recipe finder to get ideas on how to use.
How we built it
This application was built using plain html, css, and JavaScript. However, I did use the Spoonacular API to get recipes.
Challenges we ran into
Finding a good API for finding recipes took some searching, but eventually I was able to find one.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
I proud of being able to make this app look decent on both mobile and desktop so that it is more accessible to all users.
What we learned
I learned how to use an API and how to integrate the functionality of the API into my own projects.
What's next for FoodSave
Next, I would like to add a feature where users can find out if local stores, restaurants, or other retailers are giving away food that they would otherwise throw away. This way, I can create a solution that also solves some of the wastage caused by these services.
