Inspiration

As students at UNC Chapel Hill, we often find ourselves trying to budget and plan meals, which can be difficult in a campus environment. When we only have a limited amount of time and money, the best option for food isn't always so clear. We wanted to create an app that would help us consider our options while letting us be conscious of our spending habits.

What it does

It keeps track of your past food purchases.

How we built it

By using the micro-framework provided by Flask, we built a web-based application.

Challenges we ran into

It was difficult to familiarize ourselves with Flask's framework, since we had never worked with any kind of app development software.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are quite proud that we could even make anything. It was an challenge entirely different from our past coding experience, and there was a lot to learn.

What we learned

We learned how to manage both front- and back-end development. It was quite difficult to learn the entire interface between the two in less than 24 hours, with only two members. Now that we are more familiar with the framework, we feel more comfortable with web development.

What's next for foodUNC

There is a lot. We certainly feel as though we couldn't meet all of our goals, like implementing Google API and more flexible database management for the user. For example, we didn't have enough time to fully integrate the dashboard bar graph with the data, or have dynamic suggestions.
