Inspiration Our main motivation came from observing the limitations of York's meal plan, which offers few options and lacks a personalized approach to dietary needs and calorie tracking. We wanted to develop a tool to make calorie counting easier, particularly for students managing busy schedules and restricted food options.
What It Does ForkCart is currently designed to help users track their daily caloric intake. Users can input their meals, and the app calculates the total calories consumed. Our goal is to create a tool that eventually offers expanded features like macronutrient breakdown, personalized meal suggestions, and integration with York’s dining options to give students better control over their nutrition.
How We Built It We began with a brainstorming session to identify our main objectives and key features. Through collaborative discussion, we agreed to prioritize calorie counting in this initial version. From there, we used a variety of coding languages and frameworks to develop a functional prototype that could log meals and calculate calories in real-time. This foundation will allow us to build and integrate additional features as we continue development.
Challenges We Ran Into We faced several challenges throughout the project, notably with time management. Our team had previous commitments and joined the project twelve hours late, which significantly reduced our available time to work on it. Additionally, working outside of scheduled lab times made it challenging to access resources and stay on schedule.
Accomplishments That We're Proud Of We’re especially proud of the fact that we successfully created a working prototype within a tight timeline and outside the support of structured lab tests. It was rewarding to see our code come together to produce a tangible tool, and this experience gave us confidence in our problem-solving abilities.
What We Learned Throughout this project, we improved our coding skills and gained hands-on experience in app development, from ideation through implementation. Collaborating on this project also taught us more about project planning, task delegation, and troubleshooting under pressure.
What's Next for ForkCart Looking ahead, we plan to expand ForkCart by adding features we couldn’t complete due to time constraints. Potential enhancements include macronutrient tracking, personalized meal recommendations based on user goals, and integration with York’s meal plan. Our ultimate aim is to create an intuitive, comprehensive platform that meets the dietary needs of York students and beyond.
