Inspiration
Millions of children every year have their childhoods taken away from them due to individuals with malicious intent. At ages where children can barely walk, child traffickers constantly take action and kidnap them for their own benefit. The time has come where we stop relying on the police force to put an end to this problem and finally take matters into our own hands.
What it does
The app allows users to file reports of their missing children along with uploading a picture of the child that went missing. From there on, if any volunteer sees a child out on the streets and believes that this child could be a possible victim of child trafficking, all he/she has to do is open up the app and take a picture of the child. This picture is uploaded to the database and if a match of the child is found, the parents receive and email with the child's location and image.
How I built it
For the Front End of the app, I used Swift iOS Development. For the Backend, in order to make sure I had a backup database, I used Firebase. However, most of the data is being stored in an AWS bucket so that I can run all of the operations I need to when I need to. When an image is uploaded, facial recognition tests are ran in my backend AWS and if a match above a certain % is found, an email is sent out.
Challenges I ran into
One of the major challenges I ran into was how to connect the backend AWS system to my Front-End XCode environment. Eventually, I was able to resolve this by referencing specific values that were necessary to call from the AWS environment.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
The whole Facial Recognition facility of the app and how it truly does strive to make a difference.
What I learned
I learned the true importance of data science in making a difference throughout the world. Its impact is constantly underestimated and with the right technology, it can simplify hundreds of problems.
What's next for Fownd
Currently, I am not using any datasets because for its starting stages I believed it to be best to make the users of the app my continuously growing "dataset". Additionally, no other datasets that I searched through were providing the information I needed to make the app run correctly. The next steps would be to find such a dataset or reach out to an authority who might have access to such a dataset that provides me with ample informational fields for me to implement in my app.
