Inspiration
We're all big fans of Stardew Valley / Animal Crossing, so we wanted to build something that had some of the aspects of those games, but also had a world that was satisfying to explore in MR and some degree of tension.
What it does
This is our list of major features:
- Explore an open world diorama full of details that leverages the Quest 3’s PASSTHROUGH capabilities in a new and exciting way
- Have dynamic conversations with NPCs that use the VOICE SDK’s text-to-speech and lip-sync integrations
- Bring “the world to your size” and gather resources using mechanics from the INTERACTION SDK
- Use your resources to build houses, which will, in turn, create NPCs that can gather resources for you on their own.
- Decide how you want to deal with an impending attack on your village. This will lead to 1 of 3 unique outcomes.
- Play online with other players! If another player is playing a portal will appear that will allow you to join them as a guest. The joining player will then enter the host’s world and can help gather resources for them (only gold currently).
How we built it
We each started in separate scenes roughing out the proof of concept versions of the features we wanted to build. After a couple of weeks of that we then brought them all together. Then after one or two more weeks of development we took a look at what we had and decided how we wanted to pull the whole thing together, and did our best to make that happen.
Challenges we ran into
The Meta VoiceSDK worked great when we were running from Unity on PC, but we couldn't get it to work at once we made an APK build. We still haven't sorted that out.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We were able to create a somewhat open ended experience that had clear stakes and multiple ways it could resolve.
What we learned
Taking some time to organize our Scene and Prefab hierarchies a bit more as we were hacking away would have definitely saved us some headaches.
What's next for The Haunted Crossing
We want to build the full game. We have a ton of ideas and can't wait to get started!
