Inspiration

When I was young, I had to deal with many health issues. This meant lots of doctors’ appointments, and being inundated with complex information and instructions to remember. It was definitely overwhelming, especially for a child. We wanted to create an app that helps children understand what is going on with their treatment, and help them understand that they play a role in their own treatment and overall health.

What it does

Health Quest provides a simple, easy to use, and fun format for children and adults to learn more about their health and stay on track with their health goals. Using story modes called Quests and a rewards system utilizing Echo AR, we're able to provide incentives and a fast feedback loop to reward health education and smart decisions. The companion administrative tool also allows doctors and other health professionals to custom tailor Quests to fit any treatment, health goal, and timeline. Overall, Health Quest extends the health professional's guidance to outside of the appointment and empowers individuals to learn and improve their health independently.

How we built it

To implement the mobile app, we used React Native for platform cross-compatibility and ease of development. Google Firebase/Firestore were utilized for user authentication and user profile storage. Echo AR was used to create fun rewards for reaching health goals and keeping kids engaged.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

This was the first time some of the team members have worked on a health-centric application or on a mobile app. We're proud of this project and the impact it would have on promoting health education.

We would like to give parents and healthcare professionals greater control over the Quests and rewards that players receive, to better tailor the application experience for the child and their own personal health plan.
