As my grandmother began to age, she started to lose her ability to converse in English - her second language. This lead to a lot of frustration when receiving medical care when she hospitalized for an injury. For the growing elderly immigrant population second language attrition is a reality that the health care system is not equipped for. In 2011, approximately 500,000 people in Ontario did not speak either english or french. Only 4% of doctors speak a secondary language.
Health Bridge is an app specifically designed to handle medical translation and break down communication barriers between doctor and patient. The patient answers questions about their medical history to the chat bot in their native tongue. Using Watson API, the bot has the ability to convert their speech to written text and translate this to English. A summary report is generated for the doctor, who can use the report to decide on further tests.
