Inspiration

During our brainstorming sessions, we discovered a common challenge in our personal lives: the difficulty of pursuing hobbies in today's fast-paced world. We recognized that, despite numerous technological advancements enhancing various aspects of our lives, the pursuit of physical hobbies and forming genuine connections have been largely overlooked.

This realization led us to question the age-old approach to exploring hobbies, which often lacks the convenience and accessibility needed in our modern lives. We were inspired to create a solution that not only makes it easier for people to discover and learn new hobbies but also fosters a sense of community and encourages genuine human connections.

What it does

Personalized web dashboard: shows accessible hobbies based on purchased starter kits Expert-led tutorials: learn from skilled instructors in an accessible manner Dedicated forums: connect with others who share the same hobbies Live interactions: real-time engagement and collaboration for an enhanced learning experience

How we built it

Hobbi Academy was built as a website application using several other integrated APIs to offer the services that it does, into a single-page application

Challenges we ran into

Authentication was a challenge after facing some cookie-related issues with Auth0 and not having enough time to debug it → and so we had to switch to firebase authentication for speed. Another challenge was implementing the course graph, which was difficult because each course had to be grouped with its own block which required some design.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Definitely, the successful basic integration of all the services we wanted to pull together is something we're proud of. In particular, the multi-player and graph abilities, are quite new and big innovations to the educational tech product scene.

What we learned

It's always best to develop a working MVP than a broken full app. A lot of quick decisions to cut down on our initial app design and layout had to be made in favor of finishing successfully and putting out the important features.

What's next for Hobbi Academy

  • Build the marketplace to allow people to buy/rent starter kits.
  • Allow third-party vendors to sell starter kits.
  • Monthly subscription to send users a new starter kit each month.
  • AI recommendation on which hobby to pick up
