Breast cancer is the second most diagnosed cancer in women, affecting one in every eight women in the U.S. If breast cancer is found early, there are more treatment options, and a better chance for survival.
The goal of “@Home Exam” is to provide women with improved early detection capabilities using advanced technology. Using “@Home Exam”, women will have a better chance of detecting breast abnormalities at home between their scheduled mammograms.
Our team created a cohesive 3 step tool that helps women keep track of changes to their breasts.
Step one: Self Examination “@Home Exam” directs women through their monthly self-examination. An alert will appear several days after the end of the menstrual cycle when the breasts are least likely to be swollen and tender. For men, the app follows the 30-day cycle. Users answer a series of questions from the CDC that flag potential issues like lumps, breast tissue thickening, swelling, irritation, discomfort, and more.
Step two: Scanning “@Home Exam” uses photogrammetry to create a 3D model of the chest area. The 3d scans can be compared with previous scans to identify unexpected and potentially dangerous changes. The scans are fast and easy to do using any off-the-shelf smartphone. Results are improved with the addition of high-end depth sensing systems like the LiDAR sensor on Apple’s latest devices.
Step three: Communication Privacy is of utmost importance. The results of the self-examination, 3d scans, and AI processing are encrypted and shared with health care providers through a secure channel. Health care providers receive high resolution 3D imagery and geometry for analysis. If early signs of cancer are detected the user is prompted to schedule a follow up right away.
Technologies used include Apple Depth API, photogrammetry tools like Scandy Pro, 3D modeling tools like Blender 3D, and Marvel app for user interface prototyping.
Our team met at the hackathon, and are thrilled to be a part of improving awareness, education, and early detection.
