Inspiration

Some our friends claim to have learned Korean just by watching Korean dramas five hours a day. That got us thinking about how easily language can be learned if it's naturally integrated into our lives. A lot of language programs these days focus on grammar, which makes sense because flashcards and traditional memorization is tedious. We are all for language immersion, but there's no such thing as Arabic dramas, and who's gonna read an entire book in German?

What it does

The program takes several inputs such as language to translate to, difficulty (how often translated words appear), and whether or not the user wants nouns, verbs, and/or adjectives. The program then injects html and css into the website, translating certain words and allows the user to see the English meaning by hovering over it.

How I built it

Processed html through Beautiful Soup library, used NLKT to parse the words, Google Translate to translate, and JS/CSS/HTML to inject. A prototype Google Chrome extension was also created.

Challenges I ran into

If we have to work on the back end ever again, we are gonna cry. We needed to set up some sort of server because Google chrome extensions work off javascript, but we wanted python capabilities.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

We never gave up. Except for random two hour periods when it got hard. But we never gave up.

What I learned

We learned a lot about web development, apis, and general computer science skills.
