Inspiration

We wanted a way to brag about our internet points to friends, so we made one.

What it does

takes in commands, returns scores.

How we built it

We started by figuring out how to access that twitter and reddit APIs to pull data from that, then we tried getting the scripts to run on a ruby on rails server so we could display it to a website, but that didn't work so we just sent the data to a discord bot that we wrote.

Challenges we ran into

ruby on rails doesn't like python, API accessing is hard, git was rude.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Figuring out how to use OAUTH to verify a request, and figuring out how to write a discord bot.

What's next for Internet_Score_Bot

We would like to implement Facebook, Instagram, Imgur and many other internet point platforms.

I first started by writing a file to parse what we needed from the massive files of text from data.waterloo.ca, to later use for our ancestry function. Then I helped group members build our interface with the Reddit API. It was my first time working with Python so it was a learning experience to say the least, but its similar enough to other languages. Finally, I ended up building the Discord bot and added our previous interfaces to it, to make a bot capable of checking your "scores" from specific websites. Some problems we ran into were that the social media sites we wanted to create an interface with had very strict rules on bots accessing personal information and so we were unable to work in more APIs.

Ben Wannan
I worked on databasing the back end of the original idea on a Ruby on Rails framework. Was responsible for integrating the various scripts provided by the rest of the team and arrange the information in an effective SQL system.
