Iuvo, the latin word for "to help, aid, befriend".
Inspiration
This project was inspired by a video we saw of a woman calling 911 that used code words in the middle of a domestic abuse incident to receive help. Pretending to order a pizza, she was able to give her location and stress that she needed immediate help.
What it does
The aim of this app is to disguise itself as a pizza delivery app, when it is in fact a subtle way of sending out location information to the proper authorities. This app will alert authorities if you are in danger, or will allow you to locate a safe space if needed.
How I built it
The bulk of the project was done in Swift, but the Google API was done in Python.
Challenges I ran into
A big challenge was integrating Google maps API into our iOS app. Google maps API does not provide us with a place type for "women's shelter", or "shelter", so we used police as a location instead. "Shelter" as a location must be requested to Google.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
We are proud of being able to find an idea we feel passionately about. Beyond the hackathon, we will expand on this app to hopefully be of aid to someone someday.
What I learned
We learned how to get location and create an interface in Swift. We also learned how to use Google API!
What's next for Iuvo
We would like to expand on this app to include different themes, so that it is always inconspicuous. We would like to incorporate monthly updates so that the theme of the app looks different in the eyes of the wrong person; Themes would be along the lines of different food delivery options or clothes shopping.
