Inspiration

Music has always been a powerful way to connect people—but real-life jam sessions often feel exclusive, reserved for skilled performers or close-knit circles. We wondered: what if anyone could start or join a jam instantly, no pressure, no stage—just by dropping a beat into the space around them.

What it does

  • Notice: You're walking through a park and notice a pulsing beat visualization
  • Discovery: Someone has dropped a beat already—you can hear and see their musical contribution
  • Participation: You add your own beat, now visible to others
  • Connection: A third person joins, adding another layer—now jamming together without words
  • Community: You've created a temporary micro-community through music.

"The randomness of the jam output brings joy and connects all the anonymous people in this augmented experience—whether indoor or outdoor."

"The randomness of the jam output gives us a joy to enjoy the outcome and let us and all the anonymous people connected in this augmented experience, either of indoor and outdoor."

How we built it

  1. Explored current featured Lens samples through Spectacles to understand expected collaborativity and interactivity
  2. Ideated the final Lens concept to enhance real-life experience and enable strong social connectivity
  3. Broke down the tasks and focused hard
  4. [Product Strategy] Set the value proposition, prioritized key features for MVP
  5. [UI/UX] Key screen design, logo, brand identity
  6. [Programming] Base player drag and drop & multiplayer, “Cube node” play effect and animation, sound manager.

Challenges we ran into

  • Learning Lens Studio and its SDK structure
  • Writing TypeScript and working with Lens Studio API
  • Understanding the current capabilities of Lens Studio
  • Audio management and looping using custom scripts—starting from a simple index-based loop and evolving it into a spatial logic posed difficulties

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Made a working build on Spectacles for the first time!
  • Established a concrete visual identity and user flow
  • Landed on a fun use case for what we are implementing

What we learned

  • Landing on the right idea takes time and careful deliberation
  • Referencing sample projects is a great way to learn APIs
  • A good team composition is crucial for hackathons

What's next for SpaceJam

Going forward, the value proposition will expand from social discovery to a collaborative music studio. Features to be added in future iterations include:

  1. Drop your beat: Upload your own sound files
  2. Profile sharing: Connect with people who created/dropped beats, like beats
  3. Jam with my group: Public mode (jam with strangers around you) vs. Private mode (jam with invited friends)
