Inspiration

High amounts of food waste, especially in Indonesia, and a very avoidable way to reduce it: monitoring expiry dates.

What it does

Provides a simple platform to keep track of expiring foods which promotes sustainability by decreasing food waste.

How we built it

Using Android Studio, Java, and ROOM, we used a local database to keep track of food and its expiration dates.

Challenges we ran into

We had to find an alternative database solution quite late into the hackathon due to unforeseen incompatibilities.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Completing a semi-functional app with a thoughtful user interface using a new platform.

What we learned

Some Android development and databases for mobile applications

What's next for KulkasKu

  • Creating customizable date ranges to set reminders for specific foods and food types.
  • A text scanner to allow easier input of expiry dates.
  • A cloud solution for larger organizations such as restaurants, hotels, etc.
  • Integrating a recipe API to provide recipes for the available items.
