Inspiration

Most modern-day carbon footprint calculators do not allow for the estimations of carbon emissions geared towards cars. We wanted to build a customized version of a carbon emission calculator which can allow consumers to get a better understanding of how much a specific car model emits. This can allow them to make qualified choices upon the purchase of their next car.

What it does

Our application begins with a form which the user can fill out based on their desired car model. They will be able to receive an accurate estimate of the carbon emissions of the car.

How we built it

We built the app with the help of android studio. We are doing external API calls to https://www.carboninterface.com/ which sends back the carbon emission given the values entered by the user.

Challenges we ran into

We used an open-ended API named Carbon Interface. It took us a while to figure out how to send a request to the API due to limited documentation. We also had trouble linking our Android app with the API using Retrofit in order to be able to send the request correctly.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Our team is proud of the strong communication and teamwork skills we displayed while working on the project. We were able to easily share ideas and collaborate to build a decent product. Overcoming challenges presented by carbon footprint API was also an accomplishment we are proud of because it involved a lot of debugging which was very time-consuming. Another accomplishment that we are proud of is learning how to design a frontend using android studios. Most of us were new to this, so learning how to develop an application was a very exciting experience.

What we learned

We learned how to better use Android Studio and its functionalities and we also learned a new programming language, Kotlin, and new tools such as Retrofit.

What's next for Green Light

Project Our team is looking forward to expanding the domain of our carbon emission calculator. It will not only provide emissions of cars, but also the carbon emissions of planes, and grocery items!
