Inspiration
90% of active Duolingo users never become conversationally fluent. We wanted to change that by forcing real-life speaking practice through a daily phone call from an AI goose.
Hands-free learning also seemed like a cool idea given the current human attention economy.
What It Does
Our app uses Vapi to power real-time phone conversations between users and an AI goose that speaks in their target language. Each day has a unique theme, from date nights to political family dinners, to keep conversations fresh. Sessions last ~3 minutes, with gamified feedback and progress tracking in-app.
Challenges We Faced
- Ensuring natural-sounding, low-latency speech
- Handling multilingual prompts and fallback cases
- Making the goose funny and pedagogically effective
What We Learned
- How to design engaging, voice-first AI agents
- Why conversational fluency requires active recall, not just passive apps
- People love being yelled at in French by a goose
