Inspiration
Our team wanted to try to create a tool that would help its users access better medical care. When discussing what kind of barriers to access we wanted to target, we came to the topic of having to act as your own advocate when seeking a medical diagnosis, which can be challenging and frustrating. So, we decided to try to build a tool to make this process easier!
What it does
MedSpeak is a platform that is meant to help users who may be seeking a medical diagnosis or are living with an ongoing health condition. It lets them document their day-to-day experiences, investigate symptoms using trusted resources and helps them contact medical providers.
How we built it
We built this platform as a web application using python with a Google Custom Search API and MongoDB to create a database and function for recommending trusted sources to research their symptoms. We used html to create the frontend.
Challenges we ran into
This is a platform that has a large number of different potential features that can be implemented, so deciding which features to prioritize implementing during the span of the hackathon was challenging.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're happy to say that we were able to build a working application that is able to give a glimpse into the possibilities we envisioned for a project like this one!
What we learned
This project really tested our ability to put the idea we were visualizing into code. Working together to do this really helped us improve both our technical skills and our ability to work as a team.
What's next for MedSpeak
Going forward, we want to improve the 'Add an Entry' function. Ideally, we want to use it to guide a user to give potentially insightful information about their condition so we can give them better resources and help them word their concerns to healthcare providers.
