Inspiration
Ordering and shipping merchandise overseas can be difficult when there are high costs associated with it. Often, it is the customers who have to bear shipping fees that may be as much as the price of the merchandise itself. This inspired us to create a website where customers living anywhere in the world can order unique merchandise, for lower or free shipping costs.
What it does
Our website, MerchMatch, brings the merchandise to the customer's location, by using a unique method. Once the user comes to our website, they will have the option to create an account or login. If they want to create an account, they'll need to fill in their personal info (name, email, address, etc). Once the user has an account, they can browse and order signature merchandise. When the user has all their items in their cart, they will proceed to checkout. Each user will pay separately for their merch, but our website pools the money of everyone by grouping (users in the database are grouped together by location). Then a single bulk order to placed, which will arrive at a public location, for pickup. In this manner, we lower shipping costs and other fees for the customers, thereby increasing customer satisfaction.
How we built it
We used Figma for designing the website and HTML/CSS for the frontend.

Challenges we ran into
Some of our team members did not have experience creating a website or coding in HTML/CSS, so they had to learn more about it, before we could start our project. Another challenge we faced was coming up with a feasible idea for the project. We had to come up with something that did not already exist in today's society and that we could implement within the given time frame. Additionally, we were located in different time zones, which made it a bit difficult to collaborate.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud that we were able to complete the project in the given time frame. We used a modern and minimalistic design that made the website easy to use and be fully functional. Moreover, our team members sharpened their front-end and designing skills.
What we learned
We learnt how to efficiently collaborate with other developers as well as how to make a fully functional website. We also learnt how to help each other out when needed.
What's next for MerchMatch
Building a mobile app for the project and adding more features (payment options, crowd-sourcing, etc.) We also want to create a larger database and implement backend development.
