Inspiration for Meta Mini Games:
The inspiration for this game came from my experiences playing VR (mainly gorilla tag) games and Roblox. The goal of this competition is to make engaging short loop worlds that work seamlessly on mobile. One thing I love to do and am know for in the Gorilla Tag community is making up and hosting mini games. I also remembered playing a game on Roblox called Epic Mini Games, and thought a game like this would be an amazing fit for Meta Horizon Worlds, and could be much more fun in VR. I also wanted to make some sort of asymmetric playing experience between Mobile & VR and I think these mini games provide a very good opportunity for this.
What it does:
Meta Mini Games is a world where you can compete in random mini game challenges vs other VR or Mobile players. These games will have a single winner and should stir up quite the competition in Meta Horizon Worlds. Currently this game has an asymmetric structure where there is a max of 3 Mobile players, who are the hosts of these mini games, and up to 12 VR players who compete in these mini games. The hosts task varies depending on the mini game, but can usually be broken down into the following categories: Sabotaging or Judging. No matter what they are doing, the hosts' job is to help eliminate all but one competitor from any given mini game. There is a Top Winners leaderboard and will be lots of associated quest & prizes with getting wins.
How I built it:
Obviously I used Meta Horizon Worlds, mainly the Desktop editor, and typescript. I learned this by utilizing the documentation, the tutorial worlds, and receiving advice from some amazing devs on the discord! I built some of the mini game maps myself and used Meta's Asset library for other ones to speed up the process.
Challenges I ran into:
This whole project has been an insane challenge, I have had about 7 days to learn and build a game with a completely new programming language and Meta Horizon Worlds. I had never even visited any worlds in Horizon Worlds before this. Recreating Gorilla Tag locomotion was also extremely difficult because some of the more limited functionalities and prebuilt locomotion systems in Horizon Worlds. It end up taking 4 whole days out of my 7 days, but I also learned typescript while doing this, so this time was not completely wasted. This Hackathon has also been especially challenging for me since I have had to go to school 5 days this week, so basically I haven't slept.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of:
I believe I am the first person to implement Gorilla Tag style locomotion into Meta Horizon Worlds! I am also just very proud that I was able to make this much progress on a game in a brand new game engine in 7 days. I think this really speaks to what is possible within Meta Horizon Worlds!
What I learned:
I learned how to write code in typescript and how to use the Meta Horizon Worlds VR & Desktop editors. I actually really liked using Meta Horizon Worlds for game development, I know their is limited functionality, but the iteration speed is amazing. Having multiplayer built into the system and also having an Asset Library increases building speed by an insane amount and was just awesome to have.
What's next for Meta Mini Games:
MORE MINI GAMES! The whole point of this game is for it to never become boring. I hope to keep adding fun and unique mini games in here to play with my friends and keep other people coming back. I will also be adding cosmetics an in world currency and tons of other items you can buy/earn. One other cool thing I plan to do is add virtual spaces that people can buy or rent to hold events or just chill with friends in this game. I also want to add fun areas where people can just mess around kind of like in Gorilla Tag. I plan on adding tools that make it easier for players to come up with and host their own little mini game ideas like I always dreamed of doing in gorilla tag. Lastly I will probably end up making separate worlds or just separate modes where mobile players can compete vs each other, with VR players as the host or all VR or all mobile, or with each category mixed. Allowing VR players to be the host in the future will create so many more mini game possibilities, because of all the locomotion and movement that can be utilized in the game. With all these planned features, I think the future looks very bright for Meta Mini Games!!
