Inspiration
Having recently taken a Nutritional Science class, I felt inspired to try and tackle the issue of micronutrient deficiency in modern society. With the advent of COVID-19, more and more people are ordering groceries online, which provides a good avenue to make a change through technology.
What it does
Micro Counter is a Google Chrome extension that is usable on the Wegmans website. It analyzes the products in your cart/past orders and presents some basic information about their micronutrient profiles.
Challenges we ran into / What we learned
Challenges were largely technical. While I have previously worked with both Chrome extensions and APIs, combining the two required a new approach. In particular, I learned a lot about asynchronous operations and using JS Promises.
What's next for Micro Counter
A pressing issue with Micro Counter is the lack of quantity normalization. The presented micronutrient profile is based off of just a single serving for each product analyzed, which is not wholly reflective of total micronutrient quantities. This would be the next feature that I would prioritize adding to Micro Counter.
