Inspiration

There is a rising demand for mental health resources globally. Social media, cancel culture, and covid-19 stress are all things that individuals face daily and they all contribute to the rise in anxiety and depression. According to one study in January of 2021 41.1% of adults reported symptoms of anxiety and depression disorder, compared to 11% in January of 2019. For individuals of all ages, but especially young adults and it can be difficult to have a conversation with family, friends or a therapist about what you are experiencing.

What it does

  • Self directed mental help app
  • Therapy without financial constraints and fear of prejudice
  • Allows users to record voice notes, videos or journal entries to express their feeling
  • Based on response to daily surveys, available resources or activities such as breathing exercises, directed journal entries ,links to ideal videos and websites, and contact information for available therapists and help call centers will be suggested and tailored to the user. There is a share and save feature in the event that the user wants to communicate with a therapist, friends, family or even social media.
  • The app sends reminders to check up on you periodically and the user account is made secure as there is a PIN needed to be entered upon start of the app

How we built it

The team decided to show the proposed preview of the frontend and backend development of the chosen idea. C language was used to develop the survey that the user is to take upon the start of the app. Based on your daily mood rating, activities or resources are suggested. The survey will continue to inquire about your feelings to improve accuracy of the best help to be given. The different choices and their advised feedback were placed in an elaborate switch statement. One of the activities available on Noetic- Breathing exercises- was also coded and tested with students in the vicinity to gather their own thoughts. The code was continually updated with additional feedback. You can say that this was a form of pre-released testing. The prototype of the app was designed using Marvelapp to showcase the proposed entities to be implemented in the app. The design was based on inducing a calming effect on users and this can be seen in the final design.

Challenges we ran into

One challenge the team ran into was having to take time to understand the different software platforms used in the final design. For instance, the members were new to Marvelapp and the length for designing the prototype was elongated. Some special functions in C had to be researched to refresh the team’s memory. Moreover, making the demo video was perplexing because the team wanted to properly showcase the designed prototype for Noetic. Finally, there were a few complications with pushing the files to GitHub but at the end of the day, the team was able to overcome the challenges.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

The team came up with an app that is easily accessible that could help a lot of individuals with their mental state. As mental health is a rising issue it is important to provide a wide variety of resources adapted for all individuals.

What we learned

The team learned to use several functions to code the final design as well as never been seen before software platforms.

What's next for Noetic

Noetic will continue to be developed from the continuous feedback from individuals and testing. Extensive research will need to be carried out to add the best of resources to Noetic. The bot for the app will need to be further developed as it will regularly interact with the user. The team wants Noetic to be as interactive and helpful as possible. Multi-Factor Authentication will be implemented with the app as well as additional security measures. There is also a need to let therapists and help lines be connected to the app so that they can be contacted easily without any complications.
