For this hackathon we wanted to make something that would actually have impact on the lives of people. We had a plethora of ideas from starting conversations about controversial topics, to creating a wellness application. We decided that instead we would focus on providing for accessibility data for those with mobility impairments. We found a mobile application, wheelmaps, that already pointed out the locations that needed data on their accessibility. We saw this data was sorely lacking and wanted to try to incentivize people to help contribute to this awesome database. We thought the best way to do that was through gamification. Our web application rewards our users for contributing to this meaningful cause. We do this through a points system, and later down the road want to implement more gamification features to make it even more enticing to get users out into their community to find out what buildings are wheelchair accessible.
We used angular.js to get the location of the user and to figure out what locations around them are untagged as accessible or not accessible. We use realmap's API to pull the map and place location data. We used firebase to keep track of all of our users and many of the gamification features. We used CSS and HTML for our traditional web building and to make our website mobile friendly.
We had a really hard time thinking of ideas. We also really struggled with implementing all of our ideas within the strict time limit at this hackathon. We were only allowed about 7 hours of true coding time, and used a large chunk of it for brain storming ideas. There were also many limitations in our understanding of realmap's API's limitation.
We're proud we were able to build something that could actually impact the life of someone. Our only goal was to make someone's day a little easier.
We hope to continue this project and add gamification features in the future. We also want to make it complete.
