Inspiration
- We took inspiration from the NextEra challenge and the game Overcooked. We wanted to create a fun game where players can learn the value turning off a light switch can have on your electricity bill.
What it does
- Overcharge is a game that is designed to promote energy sustainability. Our players are tasked to turn off the light switches in order to keep their electricity bill low. Players can view the leaderboard to compare their score with the top players.
How we built it
- Unity
- C#
- MongoDB
Challenges we ran into
- 3/4 members of our team had little to no experience in game development. 2/4 members did not have Unity installed.
- Learning Unity was a challenge. 3/4 of us were unfamiliar with its component based architecture.
- Getting MongoDB started was also difficult. We had issues connecting to it on the Unity platform.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- We were successfully able to build the project, with very limited prior experience.
- We were able to effectively communicate, collaborate, and learn from each other's experiences.
What we learned
- We learned the basics of Unity, how to use it, design scenes, prefabs, and display data from an external cloud database.
- We learned how to setup a cloud Mongo database and connect to it so we can store and update player information.
What's next for Overcharged
- We would like to add more levels with additional houses users can play in.
- We would like to add a multiplayer option, so players can directly interact with one another.
- We would like to add add more electronics players can interact with while playing the game.
