Inspiration
Mason students are always practicing their skills and creativity either by providing services or creating products, yet they can only share these on social media. To advertise their haircut or pedicure services, it can be difficult to reach a broader audience of potential customers. Our goal is to help publicize these services and help people gain more experience freely and possibly turn hobbies into profits by providing a one-stop-shop platform for all students to experience.
What it does
PeerPort is a platform that connects students from the same school together, promoting local exchanges of products and services within the campus community. When a user signs up using their school email address, they are given access to all listings from their given school and access to begin selling. PeerPort utilizes industry leading AWS ML models to personalize listing recommendations to users, enhancing the student experience.
How we built it
We built PeerPort by using node.js with typescript to create a solid and responsive front end, which is linked to our own API. We used AWS Personalize which is powered by AWS SageMaker. We utilized S3 and mongoDB to ensure data storage that is available quickly and efficiently for our purposes.
Challenges we ran into
The first issue we encountered was deciding on a topic that would qualify for multiple tracks. Another issue we faced was figuring out how to integrate AWS product recommendations into our website. Training the AI took up a large portion of time.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of optimizing our AI to provide reliable results that fit individual users.
What we learned
We learned how to work with AWS.
What's next for PeerPort
The next step is to expand to other college campuses.
