Inspiration

There are children and youth in Waterloo Region who experience chronic hunger living in severe food insecure homes. Approximately 3,000 children in our community do not have access to the nourishment they need to thrive mentally, physically, or socially. School nutrition programs help, but these programs only exist during school hours on the days school is in session.

PIARU (Priority Indicator for Access to Resources for the Underprivileged) allows Food4Kids Waterloo Region (F4KWR) to easily identify which kids need their services the most, and displays the data in an easy to comprehend manner.

What it does

In collaboration with the school board, all students in elementary and middle schools will take a survey which asks them questions that can subtly imply their need for food resources, to reduce the risk for stigma. Question responses are converted into a JSON file are then quantified through a Java program which adds these numbers up to signify the individual's need.

An internal website only accessible by F4KWR staff allow them to see this data organized in an easily accessible manner.
