Inspiration
Have you ever lost a plant whether it be accidental or due to neglect? We have and we empathize with you if you've also been in the same boat. Caring for plants, especially those that are high-maintenance, can be difficult. Not everyone is born with a natural green thumb. The idea for Plotany was sprouted from our desire to stop seeing plants die and priceless resources go to waste. With the power of GIS and Esri software, we knew we could create a service that will help us and gardeners of all experience levels achieve our mission of saving plants and helping our Earth.
What it does
Plotany is a GIS-powered mobile application that provides local, real-time gardening support tailored to each user's environment. Plotany delivers intelligent plant recommendations as well as localized pest and disease alerts. How do we do this? We use your exact geolocation to gather hyper-specific data, using spatial data we've compiled from Esri's Living Atlas.
Plotany combines environmental data like soil type, local climate, and biome to help you grow what naturally thrives in your garden area. Whether you're a first-time gardener or a native plant enthusiast, Plotany makes sustainable gardening simple, efficient, and location-smart empowering you to grow healthier, climate-resilient gardens that are also protected from pests and disease.
How we built it
- Built using .NET MAUI and the ArcGIS Maps SDK for .NET
- Integrated ArcGIS online and Survey123 to visualize and collect live pest and disease data
- ArcGIS Online hosts our spatial datasets and map services from Esri’s Living Atlas (soil types, pest quarantine zones, climate zone)
Challenges we ran into
Our original scope was too broad. We were not able to install all of the features we wanted to add such as predictive elements. Also were not able to include a simulation where the user is able to see a visual of their plant health under different conditions (pests, weather).
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are incredibly proud of the teamwork we showed throughout the entire hackathon process. Plotany has included contributions from all our team member since the beginning of its conception. It was created with enthusiasm for creating a better, more cared for environment with user experience constantly in mind.
What we learned
We learned to collaborate effectively in a cross-functional team, apply GIS to real-world problems, anticipate user needs through thoughtful design, and communicate our vision through a compelling pitch presentation.
What's next for plotany
Our plan is to include higher-level features and visuals such as simulations with sun shadows and a light analysis. We also want to add weather notifications, alerting users of incoming weather changes or quarantine zone alerts. In the future we also want Plotany to help you customize your garden even more with garden themes like xeriscape and butterfly gardens.
