What it does

PrideConnect is a comprehensive online platform that facilitates connection, empowerment, and support for the LGBTQ+ community and its allies. The platform provides a user-friendly interface that enables users to create personalized profiles, join mentorship programs, explore an extensive resource hub, discover LGBTQ+ events, and customize their accessibility settings. Through these features, PrideConnect aims to foster a sense of belonging, promote visibility, and empower individuals to thrive in their personal and professional lives. How we built it

PrideConnect was built using a powerful stack of technologies to deliver a seamless and empowering user experience. The backend was developed using Python and the Flask web framework, while MongoDB served as the efficient and scalable database for storing user profiles, mentorship data, and event details. Microsoft Azure's machine learning algorithms were harnessed to suggest personalized mentors and events based on user quiz answers and previous attendance. On the frontend, HTML, CSS, and JavaScript were utilized to create a responsive and visually appealing user interface. Rigorous testing and continuous user feedback ensured a reliable and inclusive platform, empowering the LGBTQ+ community to connect, access resources, and thrive in a supportive online environment.

Challenges we ran into

During the development of PrideConnect, we encountered various technical challenges that demanded innovative solutions. One notable challenge was the integration of MongoDB as the database to handle large amounts of user data efficiently. We overcame this challenge by optimizing database queries, implementing indexing strategies, and leveraging caching mechanisms to enhance performance and scalability. Another challenge was the implementation of Microsoft Azure's machine learning algorithms for personalized mentor and event recommendations. We overcame this challenge by working closely with data scientists, fine-tuning the algorithms, and integrating them seamlessly into the platform.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

PrideConnect stands out as an exemplary accessibility hack by prioritizing inclusivity and ensuring accessibility for users of diverse backgrounds. The web app incorporates features like adjustable font sizes, customizable color contrast settings, and text-to-speech and speech-to-text functionalities, enabling individuals with varying abilities to access and navigate the platform seamlessly. By implementing these inclusive design principles, PrideConnect empowers users to customize their experience, making it more accessible and user-friendly for everyone, regardless of their specific accessibility needs.

What we learned

It was the first time we implemented MongoDB as the database, and we gained hands-on experience in optimizing data retrieval and storage. Integrating Microsoft Azure's machine learning algorithms for personalized recommendations was also a new endeavor, requiring close collaboration between developers and data scientists to fine-tune the models. Additionally, ensuring the security and privacy of user data presented unique challenges that prompted us to delve into robust encryption and authentication protocols. Throughout the development process, we learned the importance of thorough research, collaboration, and agile problem-solving.

What's next for PrideConnect

Moving forward, our focus will be on expanding the features and functionality of PrideConnect to provide an even more comprehensive and empowering experience for the LGBTQ+ community. We aim to enhance the machine learning algorithms to deliver even more accurate and personalized recommendations for mentors, events, and resources. Additionally, we plan to foster greater community engagement by introducing interactive features such as forums, chat functionality, and virtual meetups. We also aspire to establish partnerships with organizations and individuals who can contribute valuable resources and expertise to further enrich the platform. Ultimately, our goal is to create a dynamic and inclusive space that connects, supports, and empowers the LGBTQ+ community on their journey of self-discovery, growth, and celebration.
