## Inspiration Our idea began with a simple yet powerful realization: the growing impact of waste on our environment. This app can simplify and encourage proper recycling habits, making it easier for individuals to contribute to environmental conservation in their daily lives.
What it does
Recycling Advisor is an Android app that uses image recognition to help users identify and sort their waste correctly. Users can take a picture of their waste item, and the app, through its server backend, will analyze it and provide information on how to properly recycle or dispose of it.
How we built it
We built the app using Java for Android development. The app integrates with the device's camera and sends the captured image to our server, programmed with Python. The server uses Open AI API to analyze and classify the waste type and returns the relevant information to the user's device.
Challenges we ran into
A key challenge we faced was integrating and optimizing OpenAI's API for accurate and quick image recognition and classification. Adapting the API to effectively identify a wide range of waste materials required careful tuning and testing.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of creating an app that seamlessly combines technology with environmental conservation. Achieving accuracy in waste classification and creating an engaging user experience.
What we learned
Throughout this project, we learned a great deal about waste management, recycling processes, and the power of technology in solving environmental issues. We also gained valuable experience in app development, integrating Open AI API, and user interface design.
What's next for Recycling Advisor
As we move forward, our focus will be on enhancing the app's capabilities through deeper integration with OpenAI's API, aiming to cover a broader spectrum of waste materials for more accurate classification. We also intend to establish partnerships with nearby recycling facilities by incorporating our system into public waste bins. This implementation aims to offer users guidance on properly categorizing their waste. Additionally, we aim to enrich the app with more interactive and educational content, promoting awareness and understanding of sustainable living practices. These updates are geared towards making Recycling Advisor a more comprehensive tool for environmental conservation.
