Inspiration

It’s terrifying to imagine slowly forgetting your friends, family, memories, and even yourself, but that’s the reality for the 55 million and growing people worldwide suffering from Alzheimer’s dementia, the seventh leading cause of death in the United States. There is no cure, but studies have shown that looking at photos can actually fight against the effects of dementia by improving memory function and prolonging cognitive ability. But the problem with photos is that as dementia progresses, the patient often stops remembering what the photos represent and why they even matter. That’s why we created Remento.

What it does

Remento is an audio-based memory book to record with your loved ones, to aid them in reclaiming their past and the parts of themselves that they lost. Our goal is to stimulate memory, reduce social isolation, and alleviate depression. We aim to help individuals orient themselves to their relationships by assisting them in creating a photo book that captures their memories and personality, while also recording each significant moment. Storytelling is a low-stress way to communicate, and listening to someone you love can be a great comfort and a reminder of their support.

How we built it

We built Remento on Next.js (tailwind, javascript, react). We also used OpenAI’s API and OpenAI’s Whisper API to make Remento storytell personal and sweet memories to its users.

Challenges we ran into

The biggest challenge we ran into was maintaining state of all the photos and the slideshow through pagination and dynamic rendering. Weilin: As someone with no coding background as a marketing major, I contributed substantially to the frontend code for the first time, and went from not understanding divs at all to feeling at home recreating my designs from figma.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud that we’ve been able to build a product that can have real and meaningful impact for people who suffer from Alzheimer’s and dementia. In terms of specific features, we allow our users to query through their photos and we use AI to generate sweet, personal stories that describe their precious memories.

What we learned

First and foremost, we learned the urgency regarding dementia and the significance of building something with tangible impact for people who suffer from this terrifying disease. We also grew as a team and individually, after facing many technical issues and having to collaborate in order to conquer them.

What's next for Remento

Next for Remento is to continue innovating and expanding our offerings to better serve individuals and families affected by Alzheimer's dementia. We aim to enhance our audio-based memory book with even more features and functionalities, such as interactive storytelling experiences, personalized memory prompts, and seamless integration with other digital platforms. Additionally, we are committed to conducting ongoing research and collaborating with experts in the field to further understand the needs of our users and improve our solution's effectiveness in combating the effects of dementia. Ultimately, our mission is to provide meaningful support and companionship to those affected by Alzheimer's, empowering them to preserve and cherish their memories for years to come.
