Inspiration
Hacklahoma's "Retro" theme, combined with our curiosity about previous generations' way of life, inspired the idea for RetroRoom.
What it does
RetroRoom allows a user to photograph an everyday object around them, and see what it would look like 50, 60, or even 70 years ago! They can use this to redecorate their room in a retro style.
How we built it
We used Google Cloud Vision to recognize objects in a photo, then used echoAR to transform that output into a 3D model from the selected decade.
Challenges we ran into
Originally, we would have liked to have the program be able to decorate an entire room. Unfortunately, echoAR, when embedded on the web, was unable to render multiple 3D models at the same time, causing us to reframe our idea.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Before this hackathon, our team was not very familiar with echoAR. We learned more about it in a very short amount of time, and were able to use javascript to change the model being rendered based on a slider input. Using javascript with the slider was completely new to us as well.
What we learned
Our team learned a lot about AR and VR models, echoAR technology, and how many different applications Google Cloud Vision can have.
What's next for RetroRoom
We're hoping to add functionality that allows the user to plan out an entire room, with multiple models rendered at the same time. We also want to implement a "room saving" feature, making it easy for the user to bring up entire saved rooms at the touch of a button.
