Inspiration
Runner Reload was inspired by classic platformers like Mario Bros. My goal was to combine the nostalgic feeling of jumping and dodging obstacles with the fast-paced, high-energy style of mobile endless runners.
What it does
Runner Reload is an auto-runner game where the character moves forward automatically. The only control the player has is to jump, but timing is everything. The challenge is to jump, dodge, and react to a wide range of traps and obstacles while keeping the energy bar charged.
If the energy runs out or all lives are lost, itβs game over. Luckily, there are Energy Reloads and power-ups that help players stay alive longer. There is also an in-game shop with upgrades and special cosmetics that can grant side effects like lower gravity or reduced energy consumption, but some of them come with hidden curses.
How we built it
Runner Reload was created using the Horizon Worlds desktop editor, with all 3D assets imported from Blender, and all menus designed in Photoshop. For coding, I used VSCode to write the scripts, and GenAI Assistant helped me set up all the game systems.
Challenges we ran into
One of the biggest challenges was creating a functional and consistent menu system. I had to make sure that every part of the game connected properly, from the shop to the level selector. Finding a clean and coherent design that fit the overall style of the game also took time and testing. Another challenge was adding sounds to buttons and making sure the level selector worked smoothly and intuitively for the player.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Iβm proud of building a fully functional auto-runner system inside Horizon Worlds, complete with levels, leaderboards, a working shop, and a quest system that rewards players for completing objectives. Designing creative traps such as moving platforms, spinning mills, collapsing bridges, TNTs, and lava sections also helped make each level unique and exciting.
What we learned
I learned how to improve my level design process, organize complex game systems, and make every element work together smoothly. I also gained experience in balancing gameplay, creating progression systems, and designing mechanics that keep players motivated and challenged.
What's next for Runner Reload
The next step for Runner Reload is to add more levels with new challenges, new cosmetics and upgrades, and new gameplay mechanics that make each run feel fresh and dynamic. I want to keep expanding the game with creative content that keeps it fun and rewarding for players of all skill levels.
