Inspiration

We were inspired by this hackathon's zoo theme so we wanted to do something to help zoos / animals.

What it does

Our website provides a fundraising platform for zoos and animal sanctuaries to raise funds for their animals. Users can place bids on the animals and get their name as the "owner" until the next auction. Participating zoos and animal sanctuaries can also do programs where the winning bidders can meet the animals that they donated to.

How we built it

We used React to develop the website because most of our team was already somewhat familiar with it. We used Google Cloud for the login and Firebase for our database.

Challenges we ran into

No one on our team had much experience with front-end design, so we all had to contribute as much as we could.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We managed to finish an MVP that can help real zoos and animal sanctuaries raise the money that they need.

What we learned

Our team all got more familiar with React, especially working with rendering the DOM. We all also learned that you should get some sleep the night before a hackathon. One night without sleep is a lot easier to get through than two in a row.

What's next for SafariSaver

We need to reach out to local zoos and find partners to actually raise money for. We also need to finish the payment system.
