Inspiration: The project was born out of a need to address the waste mismanagement in my community. Seeing how improper waste disposal led to environmental degradation and health risks, especially with recent outbreaks of colera, We are inspired to create a solution that would not only solve the problem but also empower the community to manage their waste sustainably. The potential to make our community clean and healthy.
What I Learned: Through this project, We learned about the complexity of waste management and the impact of community behaviour on environmental sustainability. We understood the importance of education, awareness in fostering responsible practices and community action, and how technology could streamline waste collection, sorting, and recycling. Additionally, We developed a deep appreciation for collaboration, from local governments to businesses and waste collectors.
How I Built the Project: The project began with community engagement—talking to residents, local waste collectors, and businesses to understand their pain points. We then designed Shara, a waste management app, leveraging tech tools like React for the front-end and Node.js for the back-end. Features like real-time notifications for waste pickup, sorting guidelines, and a recycling marketplace were incorporated based on user feedback.
Challenges Faced: We faced significant hurdles such as getting people to adopt the new system, especially in areas with low digital literacy. Educating the public on proper waste sorting and convincing them of its benefits took time. Technologically, building an app that could scale to meet growing demand while remaining affordable for users was another challenge. We also had to secure partnerships with recycling companies and waste management agencies.
