Inspiration

People who are not in a sorority or fraternity may not have the luxury of having a sober driver when they go out. In worst cases, they drive under the influence or they get into the backseat of a car with an intoxicated driver. We believe that all students attending a college or university should have a resource to be able to get back home safely and this is why we created Smart Drivers. It can allow every student to get a safe ride home without breaking the bank.

What it does

We created a website where a verified student enrolled in a university can easily sign up to be either a sober driver or a passenger at their university for free. The website prompts the student to fill out a form to be either a driver or a passenger, and then it texts a driver when there is a passenger for them to pick up.

How we built it

We built our website using Velo by Wix, Twilio for messaging, and .tech domain from Domain.com.

Challenges we ran into

Some challenges we ran into were when we tried to troubleshoot some issues, the Wix support pages were not up to date with correct information and we did not have enough time or resources to implement all the features we wanted to have.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of our logo, the text message feature, and the potential usefulness of Smart Drivers.

What we learned

We are proud of our logo, the text message feature, and the potential usefulness of Smart Drivers.

What's next for Smart Drivers

Future considerations for Smart Drivers would include adding more features such as using NFC chip technology to ensure passenger(s) get in the car and get dropped off at their location by having the driver and passenger tap phones at pick up and drop off location and being able to implement an interactive calendar for driver scheduling. We would also like to have Smart Drivers automatically query the data collections for the drivers and passengers, select the first of each to be the next sober ride, and then remove that driver and passenger from the top of the database.

Business Proposal

We have heard countless stories from people all over college campuses discussing the issue of having designated drivers. It’s a classic scenario: a group of friends wants to go to the bar, and then everybody starts staring at each other because nobody wants to be the sober one. Someone complains about always having to be the designated driver, and then someone else points fingers at the person who never volunteers to drive. If everyone refuses to be the designated driver, the only option is to find a ride from another friend or a stranger. Many sororities and fraternities have systems where one person must organize and execute rides for their members, but for the people who are not involved in these organizations, most people turn to Uber because it’s the most convenient. People who are not in a sorority or fraternity may not have the luxury of having a sober driver when they go out. In the worst-case scenario, they drive under the influence or they get into the backseat of a car with an intoxicated driver. According to Toney Law Firm LLC, 30% of college students admit to driving under the influence of alcohol and over 50% of college students report getting into a car with an intoxicated driver (The Toney Law Firm, 2021). We believe that all students attending a college or university should have a resource to be able to get home safely and this is why we created Smart Drivers. It can allow every student to get a safe ride home without breaking the bank or bothering their roommate for the 100th time. Smart Drivers is a free website that universities and colleges can utilize for their students that can track, record, and organize sober drivers for students that need them.
