Inspiration
The smart pillbox is born of the desire to positively impact the lives of relatives and loved ones who may need constant care and attention.
What it does
It's a device that helps keep track of the intake of oral medication using a specialized box equipped with a wifi module that logs data about the patient in the cloud, letting those responsible for them rest assured that they're following up with prescribed treatment, and alerting them of deviations from the prescription plan for timely intervention.
How I built it
Using the Particle Photon WiFi module to capture changes to sensors in the box, and IBM BlueMix cloud services to log sensor changes in a server. Twilio from Microsoft Azure was also used to send text alerts.
Challenges I ran into
Some learning curve in using web development tools.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
Getting the product to work somewhat was great.
What I learned
Got to learn about a few new software tools, and understand a little better about the Internet of Things.
What's next for smart pillbox
We'll keep thinking of ways to make it better. The most important thing is the need it meets, which is the ability to follow up with the medical needs of loved ones to make sure they're being met, and we want to bring more of that enabling tech to the table using the IoT.
