Inspiration
Our inspiration for the project came after some gruelling hours of brainstorming. Having the idea of creating a web app, we wanted to build something that brings interactive gameplay with friends during Covid-19, encouraging people to stay at home.
What it does
Storyio is a web app that allows players to work with each other to build a story. Each player takes turns writing out one sentence in a story as well as giving the next player a prompt to use. This leads to hilarious storytelling! It features the creation of private rooms using a generated code, selection of the amount of players, as well as setting a max word limit.
How we built it
We used React as well as Firebase to create Storyio.
Challenges we ran into
The most challenging problem we ran into was figuring out how to use a database to enable our multiplayer feature. At first, we tried CockroachDB but could not figure out some of the details, then we tried firebase and had to downgrade a few versions in order for it to work. Due to the multiplayer aspect, we also had to make sure that if the database is updated, the web app updates as well so that everyone can see the most updated version of the story!
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're proud of our amazing cooperation and delegation of workload to all the team members so that everyone could work on what they wanted to do as well as learn something new!
What we learned
We learned how to incorporate Firebase into a web app and make a multiplayer game.
What's next for Storyio
We feel like Storyio has the potential to become a nice online party game. After Hack the North is over, our goal is to continue working on the project and refine its features (Maybe add in more options than just the prompt).
