Inspiration
We were inspired to create a digital logging system for the Wellspring Women's Center. Their main issue they faced were the slow and error prone logging of donation items. We wanted to create a simple and automated digital solution that helps them best serve the community.
What it does
Tabula is a digital donation tracking system that utilized barcode scanning in order to speed up the logging process. It leverages AI to automatically sort donated items into different categories, while also providing a manual sorting feature in case the AI is unsure of the category. The site also displays metrics and graphs of donated items, to see which items are in stock. The site also allows users to track items they give out as well as an AI chat feature for users to ask specific questions about the stock.
How we built it
We used React and TailwindCCS for the front end, and AWS to host the website. Supabase was used for login and authentication, and the upcitemdb API for the item information. Gemini was used for the item classification and chatbot feature.
Challenges we ran into
A major challenge we ran into was finding an API for barcode scanning and linking an item's barcode to the description. We also ran into problems with implementing the AI features.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud to make a website which helps Wellspring Women’s Center. We are also proud of the wealth of features such as real-time intake, review, dashboarding, and grounded Q&A while keeping the workflow simple enough for volunteers to use quickly.
What we learned
We learned that AI works best here as a helper, not a decision-maker, and that human review is essential for dignity and accuracy.
What's next for Tabula
We are hoping to deploy Tabula to Wellspring Women’s Center and have them use our project. We are excited to see what our creation will bring to the table.
