Inspiration
We live in an age of digital learning, where there are ever tons and tons more of resources available online, from audio to video. People living in modern countries can go online whenever they want and access content to learn to their hearts content. However, there are over 4 billion people in the world without access to internet who want desperately to learn to make their lives better but aren't able to.
What is TellALecture2Me?
While billions of people lack internet, in comparison very few people around the world are without telephone access. TellALecture2Me lets people call in to numbers around the world. Callers then go through an interactive voice response system, which helps to search through a huge library of online audio learning resources. We then serve up that audio to them through the phone.
In addition to providing resources, the TellALecture2Me website also provides real time data on who is learning what, and when. We want to put data into the hands of government and education institutions in impoverished nations to improve their own education systems and gain insight into what people are interested in learning more about.
Challenges and Accomplishments
Ultimately a big technical challenge for us was getting the backend service with IVR working as well as we'd like. Being part of the smartphone and computer age, it was frustrating to deal with interaction using only the number digits. Also because neither of us come from a strong front end backend, building out real time charts and maps that served meaningful data was also a difficult task.
What's next for TellALecture2Me
We want to expand on our library of resources and add the engineering work to be able to support not only audio lectures from our library but being able to search through audio, video and literature resources from other websites which we would then process and serve up. We are also interested in adding more features to our interactive voice response system which would include being able to skip/go back/pause and otherwise navigate through the audio.
