Inspiration
To allow users to change their habits with minimal effort and get more companies on track to build a sustainable future.
What it does
While shopping, the user would scan the barcode of a product and receive a sustainability grade of the company that produced it.
How I built it
My team and I developed this application using python for the backend and HTML script for the front end website. We used multiple modules to be able to run the code efficiently notably pyzbar to analyze QR and Bar codes and then cvs module to deal with our excel based database that links to keywords that we scan for on the internet.
Challenges I ran into
Downloading and using modules didn't always come easy during the 24 hours as most of them were inaccessible most of the time, however, for my teammates had a greater challenge as they had to learn an entirely new language to be able to code our website.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
9 hours in we felt that our project wasn't original enough so we decided to change into The Right Choice. Despite this, we worked together and managed to complete a project that met our standards.
What I learned
New Languages and how to better work in a team for this setting, and most importantly, that we can all be productive for more than 24 hours straight!! :)
What's next for The Right Choice
The app would suggest more environmentally friendly products and scan entire grocery stores for the ethically sourced products alleviating the difficulty of morally responsible shopping. One feature can be specific industry sustainability metrics which users will be given a drop-down menu with stats of the company ranked against others in the sector. For example: Labor standards, locally sourced material in the garment industry Environmental and carbon footprint, treatment of animals and locally grown produce in the food industry
