Inspiration
As students at the University of Missouri, we've had major problems with finding a good source of information for topics like bus routes, on-campus parking enforcement times, dining hall hours, and also being able to hear the authentic voices of the student body regarding all of these issues. After a few hours of discussion, we thought, why solve one problem when you can solve multiple! Thus, the idea of TiGo! was born.
What it does
TiGo! is a web app that makes public transportation, parking details, and facility/dining hour information more easily accessible to MU students. TiGo! focuses on a clean, modern UI and easy-to-navigate map. TiGo also has the ability to receive and share live updates from users about problems like traffic hazards, crimes, and other incidents.
How we built it
To make TiGo we used:
- JavaScript
- Google Firebase
- HTML5
- CSS
- Bootstrap
- Google Maps API
- OpenWeather API
- HTML GeoLocation API
Challenges we ran into
- We were not super familiar with the Google Maps API, and it was a challenge to learn most of it in one weekend. Additionally, we had difficulties with implementing the Google Firebase Database, since that was one of the core components of our project. Lastly, compiling all of the data for our project was difficult, since the information was decentralized.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Everyone was able to learn, adapt, and contribute to the Tech Stack that we used. Additionally, overcoming various merge conflicts and learning how to balance work and fun with friends was definitely a hard task that we were able to overcome.
What we learned
Don't be afraid to pick up technology that you are unfamiliar with, as it can seem daunting at first, but overtime it will become easier and will always be immensely rewarding in the end. We also learned that coming up with an organized plan before touching any code makes the coding 10x easier.
What's next for TiGo!
For the future of Tigo, we hope to add additional bus routes for off-campus student housing. We also want to expand upon the user-generated reports so that students can have an authentic, live source of reliable information.
